There is no definitive answer to this question as everyone’s body will react differently to a juice cleanse.

Being extremely low in naturally occurring sugars and offering an energy deficit means that weight loss tends to occur as part of any of our Greene Street Juice cleanse programs. To help answer your questions, we chatted to team Naturopath Jen Cox about how she chooses juices that support immunity and virus recovery in her own home.

1. Choose juices that will keep the veggie content high.
GSJ: Why are veggie juices so important?
JC: The human body is by and large a self-healing organism. Unfortunately, we’re just not that great at giving it the tools in really needs for that job.
Let me back this up with some context. Statistically speaking, we have what I like to refer to as “lifestyle overextension” here in Australia. Our “normal” is not actually that healthy – most of us experience chronic stress, poor sleep, admit to drinking {or not drinking] water at a level that creates chronic dehydration and overindulging in processed convenience foods. Unfortunately, something’s got to give.
With all the other challenges going on [stress, sleep deprivation, dehydration, and poor diet] we are also falling short on the recommended veggie minimums for the day. So, you can see how already – before we even encounter a cold or a virus, just at a baseline - the body probably often doesn’t have access to the tools it requires for a proper defence and/or recovery process.
This is where a daily veggie-based juice can work wonders. Adding in an easy to digest, gentle and absorbable source of vegetable nutrition can be a great way of bridging those gaps. It’s not about feeling embarrassed or ashamed that you haven’t met the minimums, a veggie juice is all about making healthy as easy as possible to do. For something maintainable and manageable as a lifestyle addition, just one juice per day is perfection. 2. Prioritise anti-inflammatory ingredients.
GSJ: What should our community look for when it comes to managing inflammation and what is the link to immunity?
JC: Inflammation comes standard in the package when we get sick. It happens at the first sign of a cold and can also be chronic [long term] when autoimmunity occurs or if we have other underlying health conditions, which will make us more susceptible to illness in the first place. Overall, inflammation plays a role in both susceptibility to colds and the immune response itself.
This explains why, when it comes to recovery speed, managing inflammation is key. All those yucky symptoms like brain fog or headache, aches, pains, and fatigue can be supported by reducing things that are “inflammation feeders” [think: processed foods, stress, overexercising and poor sleep] and boosting the things that dampen the inflammatory response [eating anti-inflammatory foods and juices, as well as good old-fashioned rest.]
There are a few key ingredients to look for when considering inflammation and these include things like ginger, turmeric and matcha green tea. All three of these have research to support their action as an anti-inflammatory agent. 3. Focus on maintainable solutions.
GSJ: Let’s make healthy easy. How do you recommend our clients consume these 8 packs? Is there a specific order, number, or time to have them?
JC: Working juice into your day should be flexible. There is no right or wrong way to drink your juice, the right timing for you will be more about understanding your actual gaps and needs than sticking to a set schedule. Think: healthy habit building rather than restriction.
Start with one juice per day – a totally manageable intake – and I invite you to choose a place for it where that juice can best support a lifestyle upgrade. This will offer compounding benefits over time, rather than a quick fix which means a small investment can be truly transformative.
Example 1: maybe you are aware that chronic stress is an issue for you. Maybe you tend to get up, rush out the door and fuel your stressed adrenals on coffee way too often, in which case a morning nourishing juice would be a great swap for one of those coffees or simply has 30 mins before one.
Example 2: maybe you reach for a processed snack mid-afternoon, crave salty or sweet foods because your body is TRULY craving a quality source of nutrition to get through the rest of the day… in which case a juice can be your swap [or addition!] there.
The moral of the story is, choose what works best for you, by adding in what you can maintain.

First up… what is Fasting?
Fasting is simply a process of controlling when you eat. There is a huge amount of research available to support the benefits of fasting for the body and mind. Just as your body and brain feel refreshed after a good night's sleep, researchers say fasting can help restore and rejuvenate your organs and systems. Yes please!
There is a huge amount of research out there for a bunch of different fasting styles. Some involve abstaining completely from food for a set period of time, while others recommend a specific restricted amount be consumed on fast days, for example 25% of your daily intake, as in the 5:2 Intermittent Fasting Protocol.
Overall though, there are a few key takeaways that are consistent for success:
Is it safe?
Controlled fasting is safe, and well researched. There are loads of different styles available to suit your goals and needs. In fact, we all fast overnight while sleeping!
In fact, researchers have found that fasting as short as overnight can reduce concentrations of metabolic biomarkers associated with chronic disease such as insulin and glucose… This is part of the reason patients are required to fast before certain blood tests are taken.

Outside of this, there is plenty of research that sees fasting as a huge benefit to reducing the impact of or preventing some of the more common diseases that the western world face. But depending on how frequently you plan to fast and your own medical history - it is usually best to consult with a trusted health professional if you plan to fast longer than 24hrs.

What happens while I fast?
Let's walk through the processes that occur in a fasing timeline.
0-3hrs fasting:
Your body is still going through the process of digesting and storing the last thing you ate. Depending on what that was, a few different hormones could be at play in your bloodstream - those that control blood sugar and hunger. This stage is often called the "growth" period - since nutrients are made available to the body to store and build.
12-24hrs fasting:
Glucose (sugar) is still your body’s main fuel source in this phase, but when we stop receiving more food, the metabolism will attempt to keep things balanced as best it can. You may feel some waves of hunger or irritability during this stage. As it becomes clear to your clever body that another resource for energy is needed, it goes ahead and finds one. Cue, fat burning!
In the 12-24hr fast zone, you’ll begin the process of switching from glucose (sugar) to ketones (fat) as your primary source of fuel. The time this takes can vary from person to person based on their internal landscape (hormones, gender, usual diet etc) but the really good news is that hunger starts to decline in this time. The hormones that cue hunger are clinically proven to reduce as time goes on in your fast. PRO TIP: all GSJ Cleanses are extremely low in fructose + naturally occurring sugars. 3% or less fructose is a rule we design all our menus by, as this helps your body switch to fat burning mode faster! 24-72hrs fasting: 1-3 days
This is the zone where the energy scales flip and ketones (fat) become your primary fuel. Your brain still needs a bit of glucose to function, so your body will make some from fat.
One of the perks of becoming fat adapted, is that fat is a slow burn fuel. As you continue into your fast, you may notice the benefits that come with this:
- you experience less spikes and dips in blood sugar than with a glucose based fuel system
- you have more energy and less irregular moods
- hunger is also likely to fade more… In fact, the research suggests that every additional 24 hours you fast, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) declines further in your bloodstream.
72-120hrs fasting: 3 - 5 days
Welcome to the prolonged fast phase.
If you’ve made it this far, you’ll find the most benefits from fat burning and all those juicy cleanse goals we see in the community. Rather than being the hardest part of a cleanse, when the GSJ community cleanse longer than 3-days, it’s commonly reported that they feel more energised and less hungry, like they could go longer if they wished!
Glucose and insulin levels will be low, hunger stays suppressed, and you’re in a steady state of fat burning.
From days 3-5, the body experiences less oxidative stress due to a drop in something called IGF-1 which researchers believe is an important part of why longer fasts bring anti-cancer and anti-aging benefits.
The decreased levels of growth hormone and insulin in the bloodstream also seem to have benefits for immunity, inflammation, the nervous system, and overall metabolic health.
120+hrs fasting: 5+ days
